Materials Collected
Food wastes are to be separated from the regular garbage and set out along the curb each week in a large "Green Bin". These food waste materials will be composted rather than landfilled.
Food Waste
Fruits and vegetables, table scraps, meat, fish, dairy products, fat, bread, rice, pasta, bones, coffee grounds, filters, tea bags, eggshells, etc.
Paper Fibres
Paper egg cartons, fast food drink trays, paper food cartons, paper plates and cups, soiled paper towels, tissues and serviettes.
Other Compostable Items
Sawdust and wood shavings, bedding from pet cages, dryer lint and hair.
Unacceptable Items
Food packaging materials, kitty litter, animal wastes, diapers and sanitary products and all plastic bags.
Kitchen Food Waste Container
Put the container in your kitchen in a convenient place. Some residents will keep it on the kitchen counter while others will prefer to place it under the kitchen sink.
Place a 100 per cent biodegradable liner bag inside this container. Empty your food wastes directly into the liner bag. When odours are noticeable or the liner bag is nearly full, tie the liner bag closed. To avoid spills and for ease of composting, carry your kitchen container and its contents to where you keep your curbside Green Bin.
Please do not set out the kitchen container at the curb. Place the curbside Green Bin at the curb, as it has a lockable lid.
Curbside Green Bin
The large curbside Green Bin is to store food waste and it is to be set out at the curb for weekly collection.
Place the curbside Green Bin in a convenient location in the garage or shed, usually near the garbage can.
Line the bottom of the curbside Green Bin with newspaper as a dry absorbent liner. Newspaper is compostable and will help minimize any odours and leakage.
On collection day, lock the lid and place the Green Bin and contents at the curb before 7 a.m.
Biodegradable Liner Bags Only
Residents who choose to use liner bags should only use 100 per cent biodegradable liner bags.
These bags are 100 per cent compostable and are made from all natural products such as cornstarch. Unlike plastic bags, these bags do not need to be removed before processing as they simply become part of the finished compost product.
Beware of imitation biodegradable bags!
Glad Bags are NOT acceptable for food waste composting in Durham Region.
Please use bags that have one of the following symbols on them.

Which is the correct biodegradable bag for my Green Bin?
WHITBY, ON - With approximately 130,000 new green bins appearing at curbs weekly within Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby, Regional residents are reminded to make sure that they are purchasing the correct biodegradable bags for their kitchen and food wastes.
Although there are many different bags available for purchase that state they are biodegradable, not all bags are acceptable in Durham Region's Green Bin program. Residents are reminded to look for the following logo when making their purchase of biodegradable bags.

"Many local retailers stock the correct types of bags, unfortunately with so many enthusiastic participants some stores have seen the bags fly off the shelves and are currently out of stock," said Regional Chair Roger Anderson. "We are thankful to the retail sector for their support of Durham's new Green Bin program, and know that they are restocking the correct types of biodegradable bags as quickly as possible."
Residents in Pickering and Ajax are reminded that kitchen and food waste may be placed directly into their green bin, and that biodegradable bags are not mandated within these two municipalities, however, biodegradable bags are required in Whitby and Oshawa.
Durham has posted a list of retailers within the Region who sell the correct types of biodegradable bags, but remind consumers to look carefully for the correct logo as these retailers may also sell bags that are not acceptable in the DurhamÕs Green Bin program.
The following three brands of bags are acceptable in Durham RegionÕs Green Bin program:
- BioBag Kitchen Food Waste Bags
- Biosak Biodegradable Compost Bags for Kitchen Organics
- Great Value Compostable Kitchen Garbage Bags
